What is the difference between Grade R & Grade T Twin Welding Hose?
Grade R: It is designed and recommended for both acetylene and oxygen. Until about 15 years ago, it was the only grade of Twin Welding Hose available. It is not recommended for use with LPG, propane, natural gas or propylene. The reason propane is not recommended is that the oil in propane will eventually dry rot the hose. This usually takes about 1 year to occur. The surface of the hose will crack and lose its flexibility. This can be a very unsafe condition and requires immediate replacement of the hose. Class R hose is not unsafe from the start, but it will have a shorter life. Hose longevity is important to some cutters and welders and not to others. R-rated twin-welded hose is cheaper, which means a lot to some users. Regardless of the grade, their hose usually won't last a year.
Grade T: Grade T twin-welded hose is designed for use with alternative fuels such as LPG, propane, natural gas and propylene. However, it can also be used with acetylene. It is more expensive than Grade R because it resists the effects of oil in propane. Although T-rated can be used with โall gasesโ, it is recommended to change the hose when switching between acetylene and alternative gases. This is because residual oil in propane can seep into the pores of the hose.
